Dr. Hyowon Lee -Interaction Design for Video Retrieval: Connecting Functionality to Usability

Abstract: Dr. Lee will summarise his role and contribution in interaction design within Centre for Digital Video Processing, a University Designated Research Centre in Dublin City University. The technology demonstration systems they develop are all equipped with carefully-considered front-end user interfaces that help us envisage the future use of such systems. Geared to the underlying techniques in video retrieval such as news story segmentation, object/face detection & tracking, event detection and personalisation, he has been designing suitable interaction schemes for these and wherepossible conducting user studies. Usability issues going hand in hand with underlying functionality have made their prototypes and demo systems more than just 'fancy demos'. He will give some examples of his efforts in this direction.

Dr. Robert Gyorodi -Non intrusive Identity Verification Systems based on face recognition techniques.

Dr. Gyorodi is a lecturer in the University of Limerick whose primary research area is in Image Processing. More details can be found on his homepage.

Dave Sinclair - Artificial Intelligence in Strategic Games

This talk will be give by Dr. David Sinclair and will be on the popular topic of Artificial Intelligence, and its application in strategic games. Whilst chess has seen significant advances, intelligent search algorithms for other strategic games still prove elusive.

Mark Mc Guill - Reverse Engineering Software

Mark McGuill is the creator of the Phoenix disassembler, a program written for inspecting Windows executable files. Mark will be speaking about reverse engineering software, and its applications in the areas of security, forensics and espionage.

It is quite a privelege for Minds to have Mark, a former NUI Maynooth graduate, to return to speak to the society. Update Material from this talk is now online

This talk will be given by Dr. John McKenna of DCU, and will be on the topic of Speech Processing. The talk will be aimed at an undergraduate level, and promised to give an excellent overview of modern speech processing techniques.

Mike Scott - Cryptography

  • Venue: CS1 Lecture Theatre, Callan Science Building
  • Time: Wednesday 12thth October: 6pm
  • Attendance: All members are requested and encouraged to attend, non-members are most welcome

This talk will be given by Mike Scott of DCU, and will be on the topic of Cryptography. I know that a lot of CS and Maths students do cryptography of one form or another, and so I'd recommend that you go along to this, you never know what you might learn. This is free to members, and two euro to non-members, and we'll have sign up sheets on the night if anyone wants to join! There will be some light refreshments available afterwards. The Minds Society Annual General Meeting (AGM)

  • Attendance: All members are requested and encouraged to attend

The Minds general meeting will be held early this year to elect some new positions, and greet all the new users. As per usual there will be pizza and light refreshments for those who attend.

The Minds Society Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The Minds AGM will be held at the start of May to decide what committee will build on the success achieved during the 2004-2005 year. All members are strongly requested to attend and enter their name for positions they believe they would be fit for.

The AGM will consist of a quick round up of the year, followed by any housekeeping issues (voting on constitution etc) that we see fit. The elections will then be held, all positions are available for the coming year. Finally the event will conclude with our traditional pizza and beer, followed by drinks in the SU. Please come along.

David Barrett: Best Practices in Web Site Design

  • Venue: CS Conference Room, Callan Science Building
  • Time: Tuesday 29th March: 6pm
  • Attendance: Anyone with more than a passing interest in web design

David is a highly qualified web designer and developer, and is returning to us this year with a new topic. Whilst his previous talks have discussed issues such as standards compliance, and the importance of CSS, this talk more focussed on how to meet your clients needs when designing a website.

David Barrett is an expert on website design, and has designed every Minds website since 2001.

The February lan was postponed due the overwhelming stress on our final year student members, and several regulars being unable to attend. This LAN is expected to be well attended as a result.

Ryan McBride: Packet Filtering and randomization in the OpenBSD network layer

Ryan McBride is a full time OpenBSD developer. He has added IPv6 support to PF, OpenBSD's stateful packet filter. Ryan will presenting two talks, summaries of which can be found at www.openbsd.org/papers/.

Cian Synott: "Attack & Defense: Computer Security Fundamentals

  • Attendance:Anyone with an interest in Computer Security

Cian Synott is an extremely highly qualified system administrator and an expert on secure systems. This talk will cover how to secure computers and networks in terms of both practices and policies.

Cian helped out with the installation of the original Minds machine (which is still alive and kicking), and it is a joy to have him return to talk us again

Scientific Writing Using LaTeX: Des Traynor, Andrew Page

  • Venue: Conference Room, Callan ScienceBuilding
  • Time: Wednesday 9th February 6pm
  • Attendance: Everyone invited, 4thyear students in particular.

Minds are holding a talk on scientific writing with LaTeX this Wednesday (9th) at 6pm in the conference room (Callan Science Building).

The talk will be divided into two halves, firstly Des Traynor will discuss methods of scientific writing, with particular regard to final year theses, and in the second half Andrew Page will show how to create professional scientific documents using the LaTeX typesetting system.

Whilst this talk will be of general interest to most, it should be considered of particular importance to fourth year students who are facing the perils of writing up.
